Your First Appointment Is Over. What Happens Now?

Understanding what comes next in your maternity journey

You’ve had your first maternity appointment.

You’ve answered questions.
Your history has been taken.
You may have had blood tests, been given information, or been told about your next appointment.

And then you leave.

You might feel relieved. You might feel excited. You might have more questions than when you arrived.

You may even be thinking:

“Okay… what happens now?”

The answer can feel surprisingly unclear.

Your first appointment is only the beginning of your maternity journey. There will be more appointments, conversations, tests, scans and decisions along the way.

But there is also something else happening between those appointments.

You are living your pregnancy.

The journey doesn’t stop when the appointment ends

Maternity care can sometimes feel like a series of appointments:

Appointment → test → scan → appointment → next step.

But your pregnancy doesn't happen in those spaces alone.

Between appointments, you are still processing what you've been told.

You may be thinking about your body, your baby, your relationship, your family, your work, your finances or your plans for the future.

You might have questions that don't come to you until you're back home.

And sometimes the question isn't even about the pregnancy itself.

It might be:

“How am I actually feeling about becoming a mother?”

“How am I going to manage everything?”

“Who is going to support me?”

“What happens if things don't go the way I imagined?”

These parts of pregnancy matter too.

So, what happens next?

The exact pattern of care can vary depending on where you live, your circumstances and the maternity service caring for you.

Generally, your next appointments will build on the information gathered at the beginning of your pregnancy.

You may have:

  • further antenatal appointments

  • blood tests or other investigations

  • ultrasound scans

  • discussions about screening

  • conversations about your health and wellbeing

  • opportunities to ask questions

  • discussions about your preferences and choices as your pregnancy progresses

  • preparation for birth and the early days with your baby

You don't have to understand the whole journey at once.

You only need to understand the next step.

Your care will continue to build

As your pregnancy progresses, your maternity team will continue to gather information about you and your baby.

Your appointments can become opportunities to talk about how things are going, ask questions and understand what is happening next.

Some appointments may feel straightforward.

Others may bring more information, more decisions or more emotions.

You may leave one appointment thinking:

“That all makes sense.”

And another thinking:

“Wait… what did they mean by that?”

Both are normal parts of navigating maternity care.

If something isn't clear, you can ask for it to be explained again.

You can ask questions at your next appointment.

You can write things down when you get home.

And if something comes to mind between appointments, you don't have to dismiss it simply because your appointment has already happened.

There is no perfect way to feel

Pregnancy isn't one emotion.

You might feel happy and overwhelmed.

Excited and nervous.

Connected to your baby and unsure about motherhood.

Confident one day and completely uncertain the next.

You might be thinking about the birth while still trying to get your head around being pregnant.

You might already be thinking about childcare, work, money, housing, relationships or another child at home.

You may be carrying responsibilities that don't disappear simply because you're pregnant.

You are still you.

Pregnancy has been added to your life.

Your life hasn't stopped.

What about the questions you didn't ask?

Sometimes you don't know what you need to ask until after you've left.

Perhaps you were given information but didn't have time to process it.

Perhaps you understood the clinical explanation but were left wondering what it means for your life.

Perhaps you saw information about pregnancy that didn't feel familiar to you or reflect your experiences.

Perhaps you simply needed a moment to think.

That's why understanding your maternity journey isn't just about remembering what happened during an appointment.

It's about having space to make sense of it afterwards too.

Try asking yourself:

What did I understand from my appointment?

What am I still unsure about?

Is there anything I wish I'd asked?

How am I feeling about what comes next?

Is there something happening in my life that I want my maternity team to know about?

You don't have to have all the answers.

Sometimes knowing what your question is is the first step.

You are allowed to be part of the conversation

Your maternity care is not simply something that happens to you.

You are part of the conversation.

That can look different for every woman.

For some, it might mean asking lots of questions.

For another woman, it might mean taking time to listen and process information before responding.

You might want to research something afterwards.

You might want to bring someone with you.

You might want to write down your thoughts before your next appointment.

You might need something explained in a different way.

There is no single right way to participate in your care.

Your voice can be part of your maternity journey.

Your next step

You don't need to know everything that will happen over the coming months.

For now, focus on understanding what comes next for you.

Know when your next appointment is.

Know what you have been told so far.

Keep track of questions that come to mind.

Notice how you are feeling.

And remember that your maternity journey is more than a timetable of appointments.

It is your pregnancy.

Your experience.

Your life.

Your voice.

CherisHer reminder

You don't have to know the whole journey today.

One appointment. One question. One step at a time.

And then there is the woman between the appointments

This is the part we don't always talk about.

The appointments have a beginning and an end.

But your pregnancy continues when you walk out of the room.

You go home.

You go to work.

You look after your children.

You manage relationships.

You make meals.

You pay bills.

You rest when you can.

You think.

You worry.

You dream.

You prepare.

You change.

Between the appointments, there is still a woman living her pregnancy.

And that woman deserves space too.
